Monsoon – the eagerly-awaited season for all of us, and Mother Earth too; of course, after enduring the scorching heat and humidity for 3-4 months, rains are a welcome guest.

After the first rains, the smell of the earth is mesmerizing, and the cool breeze relieves us from stress to some extent.

Rain brings respite from the terrible heat, but there is a drawback of the season, and what is that? Digestion issues pop up when the season begins.

How and why?

There is a link between digestion and monsoon. The air during the monsoon makes the digestive system sluggish. As a result, organs like the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine function improperly, resulting in problems like flatulence, acidity, bloating, and the feeling of fullness.

According to Ayurveda, during monsoon, Vata dosha gets aggravated, and Pitta dosha accumulates. Hence, for proper digestion, the two doshas need to be balanced. How to balance them? Here are a few tips.

Include ghee (clarified butter) in your diet: Cow ghee is an essential food in Ayurveda. Ghee stimulates the digestive juices and helps your body to absorb nutrients. In addition, it is effective in curbing gut inflammation and helps ease constipation.

Include ginger in your food: Ginger is an ideal element for any digestive problems. Ginger increases the secretion of saliva, bile & gastric juices and helps your body rapidly break down food and absorb the nutrients. It also fights gastric inflammation and helps relieve an upset stomach.

Choose the right food: Ensure to eat freshly cooked food, and avoid undercooked/stale food or raw vegetables because they may contain bacteria that trigger digestion problems. Also eat fluid-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumber, tomato, apple, citrus fruit, etc. These hydrate and help with absorption of nutrients from the digestive tract, moisten bowels, and ensure easy stool passage
