27 May

Summer is festive and these are the days you would want to enjoy the season trying out different dishes, right? Yes, of course, it’s time to enjoy the holidays with family and friends, go out, relish mouthwatering food and drinks that keep you hydrated.

However, most traditional summer foods can leave you with Pitta Dosha imbalance. According to Ayurveda, a year is divided into three seasons based on three Doshas – Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. These Doshas manifest varying amounts of the five elements – space, air, fire, water, and earth. Good health exists when the Doshas are in balance.

The feeling of dehydration sweat or irritability indicates an imbalance of the Pitta Dosha. Other symptoms include skin inflammation, acidity, burning sensation in the gut area, reddening of the eyes, and losing your cool often.

On the better side, when Pitta Dosha is balanced, you will feel energetic, joyful, strong, and a clear mental frame. Here are three important tips to help you balance Pitta Dosha in these hot days.

  • Breakfast and Lunch: Eating breakfast and lunch before the sun gets hot. It is because ‘Agni’, the digestive fire is low during summer and the appetite is weak. Eating before 11 am is highly beneficial.
  • Avoid: Say NO to hot, spicy, salty foods during these days. Foods such as meat, fish, fried items, increase Pitta Dosha. Also avoid consuming alcohol, because, alcohol can cause an imbalance in all the three Doshas.
  • Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated is an absolute must in summer. Lack of water, sugar, and salt in the body can trigger Pitta Dosha and can leave you exhausted and tired. Replenish water loss through urination and sweat by drinking water, coconut water or eating watermelon or cucumber.

Besides the above tips, you should avoid direct exposure to the sun between 11 am and 3 pm. If you are required to move outdoors, wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing and cover your head. Exercise before sunrise or late evening. Lastly, before you retire for the day, go for an evening walk on the beach or green grass. These will help you soothe the Pitta Dosha and keep you healthy, fresh, and energetic.
