Water represents Soma – the nourishing, cooling quality associated with lunar energy. Soma helps with digestion, cools and balances Pitta dosha. It supports Kapha and counteracts the dryness of Vata. It nurtures and detoxifies when it flows out of the body as waste.

60% of our body is made up of water. Water is stored everywhere inside and outside the cells to dissolve nutrients, regulate body temperature, carry waste, send messages to the brain and lubricate all moving parts. However, you lose water every day through breathing, sweat, and bowel movements. The only choice for a healthy body is to replenish the body with ample water.

Here are suggested ways to drink water -

  • Just as you should sit down to eat food sit down to drink water too.

  • Drink small sips instead of gulping a glass full of water. A small sip, swallow, breathe; repeat is the correct process.

  • Drink water throughout the day. If you have a habit of drinking too much water at once; remember, your body will not actually absorb all of it.

  • Drink water at room temperature. Ideally, lukewarm water is good for health. Cold and ice filled water turn off the digestive system.

  • Take small sips of water with your meals. If you drink too much while you eat, your stomach will not have enough room for digestive action. Ayurveda says – Fill your stomach with 50% food, 25% with water, and leave the other 25% empty for the digestive juices and digestion process.

  • Never drink loads of water before or after your meals.

  • Drink when you’re thirsty. Thirst is a natural impulse that should be hydrated. Being thirsty is a clear indication that your body needs water.

We all are different sizes with diverse diets and lifestyles. One set rule of eight glasses a day does not apply to everyone. The human body has a built-in defense measuring system: thirst. Whenever you attend thirst cues and sip water throughout the day; you will be drinking the right amount of water.
