Want to stay cool in summer? Follow These 5 Yoga Tips

Summer is setting its stronghold around us. According to Ayurveda, Summer is known as “Pitta Season”. It is characterized by fire and water elements and can evoke physical and emotional heat, varying from inflammation and short temper to hyperacidity.

Ayurveda suggests avoiding intake of spicy, oily foods as far as possible to stay cool, calm and energized this summer. Yoga is the science of holistic medicine which focuses on treating physiological imbalances caused by seasonal changes.

Yoga helps in keeping the body cool – externally and as well internally. In this article, we are going to share with you 5 tips on how to stay cool by practicing Yoga.

  1. Breathing: Start your day with Sheetali Pranayama by sticking your tongue out and curl the sides upward, toward the center of the tongue. Now, breathe in through the mouth, hold the breath and exhale through the nose, slowly. Repeat this process 5-10 times. You’ll notice the body temperature cooling down.
  2. Drinking water: Besides drinking lot of water during the day, include Sheetkari Pranayama in your routine. Open your mouth, clench your teeth and press the tongue against the teeth. Breathe in and then close your mouth and breathe out through your nostrils. Repeat this 5-10 times. Sheetkari Pranayama helps cool your body.
  3. Calming nerves: Calm your nerves with Chandrabhedi technique. It has a cooling effect on the nervous system and on the Nadis. Close your right nostril with your right thumb, then exhale through the left nostril and then breathe in through the left nostril, now close the left nostril with your little finger and exhale through the right nostril. Repeat this 5-10 times. Once you are done with Pranayama, lie down in Shavasana pose. This will help you relax and refresh.
  4. Slow down on Yoga: Practicing Yoga gently, early morning or late in the evening balances the mind and body. Shavasana will do wonders for you, especially in summer. Any form of physical activity increases your body temperature. So, avoid excessive or difficult Yoga Asanas when it is hot. You should slow down a bit.
  5. More of Shavasana: Throughout the season, focus on practicing Shavasana, because this Asana will keep you fresh and rejuvenated. For best effects, lie down near a wall with your feet touching the wall. Raise your legs and rest them on the wall. Hold the posture for a minute or two, bring the legs down. While doing this, the heart pumps out more blood, when the temperature is high. This pose helps the heart by returning more blood back to the heart.

Finally, Yoga helps develop the body and mind and brings a lot of health benefits. It is important to learn and practice Yoga under the supervision of a trained Yoga teacher.
